Keeping On in the Middle of Lent

There is something about the middle of Lent that feels different from the beginning.

When Lent first starts, there is a sense of energy. We make plans. We commit to new habits. Maybe we give something up, or promise to spend more time in prayer or scripture. The beginning of the journey feels fresh.

But somewhere along the way, right about now for many of us, the road can start to feel a little long.

The discipline we started with enthusiasm may begin to feel like pressure. The quiet reflection of Lent can surface things we weren’t expecting. Some days we may even wonder if we are really making any progress at all.

The middle of the journey can be the hardest part.

That’s why I often find encouragement in these words from scripture:

“Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.”
Hebrews 12:1–2

The writer of Hebrews reminds us that faith is not a sprint . . . it’s a long journey. And like any journey, there are moments when we feel energized and moments when we simply keep putting one foot in front of the other.

What keeps us going is not our own strength alone. It is Jesus.

When we look at the life of Jesus, we see someone who also walked a difficult road. He faced misunderstanding, rejection, exhaustion, and ultimately the cross itself. Yet he continued forward, trusting the love and purpose of God.

Jesus shows us that faithfulness isn’t about never feeling tired. It’s about continuing to walk with God even when the road feels long.

The middle of Lent invites us to do exactly that.

If your Lenten journey feels strong right now, give thanks.
If it feels challenging, take heart . . . you are not alone.
And if you feel like you’ve stumbled along the way, remember that grace is always ready to meet you where you are.

Lent is not about perfection. It is about direction.

So wherever you find yourself today, take a breath, look again to Jesus, and keep going. Easter is still ahead.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Owen
